All about hypnosis
There are many misconceptions about hypnosis. These beliefs (mostly inaccurate), can prevent you from enjoying the full benefits of hypnosis. This page aims to get rid of misconceptions about hypnosis and help you better understand it.

Hypnosis has been around for thousands of years; it is a tool that promotes relaxation.
Hypnosis as a powerful tool to facilitate both psychological and physical change in humans. It is used worldwide.

Is the hypnotic state is a second state?
The hypnotic trance refers to a modified state of consciousness. When we speak of an altered state of consciousness, we start from the assumption that there is an ordinary state of consciousness (and thus modified states).
The ordinary state of consciousness is one in which you are in a big part of the day: good here and now! Modified states of consciousness are different states than the ordinary state.
Remember: Hypnotic trance = Modified state of consciousness.
Here are some examples of the little moments of hypnosis that you can live in in everyday life:
-
When you read a book and you are completely absorbed to the point that you imagine the story as if it unfolded before your eyes.
-
When driving on a long stretch of highway and you switch to automatic mode. At the destination you might be asked how the road was, but you can not do it (because your autopilot has taken over).
-
When you see a film in the cinema and you are overwhelmed (each scene is lived intensely, as if you were there).
What does hypnosis feel like? How will I know when I'm hypnotised?
Hypnosis is an individual experience, which is generally described as a pleasant, relaxed, day dreamy state. Because hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness, or awareness, at no time will you be asleep or unaware of what is going on. You will, however, be likely to feel more relaxed than ever before. A feeling of peace, serenity and well-being generally accompany this relaxation.
Can a person get stuck in hypnosis?
No, you cannot get stuck in hypnosis. We all go in and out of natural trance several times a day. A person could choose to remain in trance because it's enjoyable but the worst that could happen is they would fall asleep and wake up as normal.
How do I become hypnotised?
I will ask you to get as comfortable as you can, usually by lying down in a therapy chair. I will then guide you into a relaxed trance state much like day dreaming by the sound of my voice.
Will I be ok to drive?
Yes. You will be totally in control of all of your faculties and able to drive home.
Are there any side effects?
Yes, lots of feelings of wellbeing and positivity!
Is hypnosis dangerous to your health?
No, hypnosis is not dangerous to your health. Some hypnotists even speak of an everyday trance (hypnosis every day) to design the moments throughout the day, which you enter into a trance in a natural way to facilitate learning and better integrate certain information (see above: The hypnotic trance is a second state).
Remember: In hypnosis you feel safe, you control the situation and it is possible to leave a trance at any time, as soon as you feel the need.
Is it true that some people can not go into a trance?
In general rules, we are all capable of hypnosis (going into a trance). Moreover, it is quite a state natural that we all know, throughout the day (see above: Is hypnosis dangerous for health?).
It may happen that because of fear, lack of confidence, or because of misconceptions about hypnosis, some "do not want" choose not to go into a trance and offer some resistance.
According to Richard Bandler (one of the founders of neuro linguistic programming), resistance does not exist: "only poor therapists exist".
That is, hypnosis is above all a relationship of trust, it is up to your therapist to offer you an approach that suits you and to support you effectively so as to establish a relationship of trust between you, in a secure environment.
Should I stay still during the hypnosis session?
In hypnosis it is possible to speak, to cough, to walk, to scratch your nose, to move, to laugh, to cry, to have a really heavy arm or so light or motionless .. like an iron bar ... Summarize, anyone in hypnosis can move without risk of breaking the trance state.
Remember: It sometimes happens that for the needs of the technique or simply for comfort, your hypnotist asks you to remain attentive and to discover the finger or the part of the body that will move alone (without your conscious collaboration).
Do I have to keep my eyes totally closed when I'm under hypnosis?
Depending on the need for the technique and sometimes for more comfort, your hypnotist may ask you to close your eyes. But it is possible to enter a trance in many ways: with closed eyes, with open eyes, or with one eye open and the other closed.
Remember: When it is necessary to avoid specific technical constraints (during mental preparation sessions or with high-level athletes), I sometimes ask the athletes to go into a trance with their eyes open.
Is it possible not to be able to leave a trance?
Rest assured, it is impossible not to go out of a trance!
During hypnosis sessions, we realize that without any suggestion from the hypnotist, it is common for people to go out of a trance on their own.
However, the hypnotic state may be more agreeable, thus making the return sometimes a little slow. In this case, rest assured: an experienced therapist knows the words to use to allow you to return to the here and now, fresh, available and ready to discover with a certain curiosity all the good things that life has in store for you!
Do you really sleep during a hypnosis session?
Do you know what makes the difference between a hypnosis session and a good night's sleep? While sleeping we can not learn, because ... we sleep!
It is for your sake, a therapist will do what is necessary to not let you "sleep" during your hypnosis session. In a trance you are actually aware of what is going on. It is possible to hear the sounds coming from the environment, the voice of the hypnotist and even remember by opening your eyes to some things that were said to you during the session hypnosis.
Remember this information because it can allow you to go even deeper into a trance! ...
Is hypnosis magic?
No, rest assured hypnosis is not magic and your hypnotist has no supernatural powers!
Some hit movies and books have wanted to combine hypnosis and magic to invoke some sort of supernatural power or control over others from the hypnotist. In reality this idea is wrong!
In fact, it can be said that any session of hypnosis is primarily a session of self-hypnosis, because the state of hypnosis reached, depends on the ability of the patient to be hypnotized.
What may seem like magic is the speed with which you can reach your goals or completely free yourself from your difficulties!
Under hypnosis, am I under the influence of the hypnotist?
Another misconception!
During hypnosis sessions it is impossible to make you realize something that goes against your morals and your will.
If you do not want to do something, then no one will be able to obligate you!
Can I totally lose control under hypnosis?
The idea that during a session of hypnosis it is necessary to drive cars, to meow like a cat, to chuckle like a chicken, to give birth on the spot or to do anything that could harm your physical or moral integrity in order for you to reach your goals is completely false ... at least in hypnosis.
Keep in mind that the needs of an entertainment stunt are very different from the needs of hypnosis.
In entertainment shows it seems obvious that the goal is to amuse the audience. To perform well, the hypnotist must carefully choose his subjects (they must react quickly to suggestions, be rather docile, sometimes shy and want to perform).
During hypnosis sessions it is very distinct, because all that is important is... you!
Remember: The objectives of the session will be set according to your needs, with your cooperation and only with your agreement. And that's the difference between a music hall show and a hypnosis session!
Is it difficult to find a competent hypnotist?
As with any other profession, some hypnotists are more competent than others and often the recommendation (word of mouth) remains the best way to find one's hypnotist.
When looking for a hypnotist, consider informing yourself about his/her technical skills, his/her training in hypnosis tools and her/his experience.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions required varies widely, depending on the individual and the challenges being addressed. A clearer idea of the number of sessions required can often be given at the Initial Consultation. Usually it's minimum 5 sessions.
What is the Initial Consultation and Assessment for?
The initial session is an integral part of your sessions and serves a number of purposes. It provides the opportunity for me to take notes and for you to describe the challenges you are currently facing. I also explain how the brain works; the relationship between our conscious and subconscious mind and I provide you with a clear understanding of the origin of our thoughts, habits and behaviors. I also explain what hypnosis is (and is not!) and how I also incorporate NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) or other methods into your tailored sessions where appropriate. During the initial session we will agree what goals you would like to work towards and put together a plan of action to help you to achieve them.
What is your confidentiality policy?
I adhere to the Code of Ethics and Conduct of my professional organization the: National Guild of Hypnosis - NGH. Whatever you tell me within our sessions is completely confidential.
Why should I choose you as my hypnotist?
We genuinely believe in hypnosis, we did a lot of specializations and we have a lot of knowledge so we are sure that it may help to change people's lives for the better. We are very positive and enthusiastic and this rubs off on our clients. We ensure that our clients leave each and every session feeling upbeat, positive, relaxed and optimistic about their future.
