Overeating Behavior

People suffering with Overeating Behavior have what is characterized as an "Uncontrollable Habit" to food, using food and eating as a way to hide from their emotions, to fill a void they feel inside, and to cope with daily stresses and problems in their lives.

What is a Excessive Eater?

Overeating Behavior is commonly known by excessive overeating or consuming abnormal amounts of food while feeling unable to stop and at loss of control.

What causes  overeating behavior?

Deep sadness and binge eating are strongly linked. Many binge eaters are either very sad or have been before; others may have trouble with impulse control and managing and expressing their feelings. Low self-esteem, loneliness, and body dissatisfaction may also contribute to binge eating. Biological risk factors.

Why binge eating is dangerous?

Weight gain is common when you binge eat. Two-thirds of those with the disorder are overweight... A lot of people who binge feel bad about their weight, too. This leads to low self-esteem, which can cause more overeating.

What are the signs and feelings of binge eating behavior?

Binge eating disorder is more accurately characterized by its emotional symptoms:

  • Lack of control once one begins to eat.

  • Deep sadness.

  • Grief.

  • Anxiety.

  • Shame.

  • Disgust or self-hatred about eating behaviors.

And many more...

Can you gain weight from one binge?

One day of binge eating may add a pound or two, but it's temporary water weight, not fat. Continuously eating more calories than your body needs -- day after day -- is what causes fat gain. Consult with your doctor if you think your binge eating is out of control and is affecting your weight.

Almost all the binge eaters have a few things that seem to be common themes:

  1. Like bulimic clients they feel helpless and unable to control the urge to binge.

  2. There is often a history of addiction or alcoholism somewhere in the family.

  3. They have been known to use shopping or credit card spending as a crutch.

  4. They are often high achievers.

  5. They don’t tell anyone about their issue.

  6. In many cases they don’t realize it is an issue until there is a crises of some kind.

  7. Weight is somewhat likely to have been an issue in teenage years.

  8. They exercise more than the average person.

  9. The issue gets worse when they are under stress.

  10. When they travel the issue reduces.

  11. They have some target foods.

  12. They prefer to binge eat in their homes – though sometimes simply refuse to have suitable foods in the house in an attempt to overcome the issue.

For many binge eaters there is no one they can talk to that will understand their challenge.  Like bulimic and anorexic clients, they feel ashamed of their issue. They subsequently develop poor self image and a sense that they just can’t help themselves. A feeling of desperation is common. You need not feel this way. It’s nothing to be ashamed of. This is a very real problem and one that can be overcome.
